SKIPPER TRUCKS CONTRIBUTES TO DRIVER TRAINING

Dontated Fuso Truck

Skipper Trucks recently donated a Mitsubishi FV Tipper Truck to the AHG Driving Centre (DTEC). We recognised this as an opportunity to assist the transport industry through the provision of a new current model for driver training.

Dealer Principal, Simon Ramsay said, “We are excited about our relationship with the AHG Driving Centre and the total safety concept which has now grown from passenger vehicles to heavy trucks. This vision has been developed by Steve Cherry, Managing Director of AHG Driving Centre, and is one that is also endorsed by our major supplier Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Australia.”

The AHG Driving Centre is the first purpose built driver training facility in Perth since the Road Safety Council facility in Mount Lawley closed in the early 1980s. The facility offers a full range of driver training including defensive driving courses; 4WD training, motor cycle training, fork lift courses, and is now extending their expertise to include heavy rigid licence accreditation. The unique facilities at the AHG Driving Centre, allow the driver to learn in a safe and controlled environment. Training on the 2 kilometre road circuit gives learners the opportunity to familiarise and become confident with the operations of the vehicle before venturing out into traffic.

Steve Cherry, says that the alliance with Skipper Trucks reinforces the long standing partnership with AHG. “As part of our ongoing commitment to driver training and education, this truck allows us to provide the highest standards in heavy vehicle training. Without the support of Skipper Trucks, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Australia and AHG, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

The freight task in Australia is projected to double between now and 2020 with minimum infrastructure changes planned for our roads. Consequently, there will be increased pressure on fleet operators to upgrade into bigger trucks so they can cater for the increased demand.

Richard Eyre, Chief Operating Officer of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Australia (MFTBA) Richard Eyre said "We at MFTBA support Skipper Trucks and AHG Driving Centre in this venture and understand the importance of offering specialist training for all operators of commercial trucks. The FV tipper is ideally suited for this application due to the fact that it has a multi-speed transmission and is a popular configuration in the Western Australian market. The increasing freight task will mean more heavy truck movements and our industry needs to clearly demonstrate to the public at large our strong focus on safety which incorporates structured driver training programs like those now offered by AHG Driving Centre (DTEC).”

DTEC will now have the opportunity to cater for training through the use of the market leading Mitsubishi Fuso FV 51. Using a current model with 345hp turbo intercooled engine and a good towing capacity gives learners actual experience in using the latest equipment and vehicle technology available within the industry.

During the concept stage of the Mitsubishi FV51 6x4 Tipper Truck, Skipper Trucks engaged the services of well regarded brake specialist Mr Fred McKay. Together they developed a state of the art braking system allowing DTEC instructors to retain maximum control if required during training.

We, together with MFTBA and the AHG Driving Centre are committed to improving the quality and raising the benchmark of driver training.
